Recently, Starbucks introduced their new menu which includes more beverages, salads, pastas and extra lunch selections. This change is most likely due to an increase in competition. McDonald's has increased their coffee line and therefore, Starbucks must step up. Starbucks has experienced several downfalls lately; Canadian Business Magazine conducted a blind taste test and declared McDonald's the winner of 'best coffee'. Now, Starbucks plans to tackle McDonald's second leading product beside burgers: Salads. Starbucks will provide a new line of Salads (Tomato Mozzarella Insabada, Champagne Pasta Salad and Albacore Tuna Penne). I think Starbucks is loosing their 'touch'. Their core business is coffee and they are slowly moving beyond the initial idea. If Starbucks began serving food they would need to hire extra staff and possibly increase the size of their stores to allocate space for the surplus inventory. Starbucks should instead stick to coffee
and pastries. During the winter

, promote hot coffee, pastries and sandwiches. During the summer, promote iced coffee, fruit and ice cream. Starbucks already has a gourmet ice cream line but I feel that it deserves a campaign to alert the public. Ice cream could be a great option for Starbucks to expand. They have the potential to overthrow ice cream leaders such as Baskin Robins and Haagen Daaz. Gourmet ice cream and sorbet with your favorite iced coffee is genius...customers would enjoy the blend. Starbucks is moving a little bit too fast and they need to realize that you can beat out competition without doing the exact same thing. You have to be different to succeed in business and Starbucks has the ability to do so. Gourmet coffee, pastries, fruits, ice cream, snacks and even bread. Another great idea: fresh bread! Starbucks should be competing with others who are currently enjoying success; Panera and Cosi are great examples. For now, Starbucks should stick with the goal: European cafe.
