THE FOOD CRISIS

I recently came accross a blog(12degreesoffreedom.blogspot.com) which had an interesting article about the world's food crisis. According to an article by the Cronical Herald, several farmers are becoming unemployed. Maple Leaf Foods, for example, cut 380 jos due to closures of their poultry plants. Farm incomes have been decreasing while debt continues to rise. Corporations that control the system are getting profitable, but small farmers see no benefit. More stories about the falling food industry have become public. Mad cow disease, e.coli, P.E.I. potato cancers, obesity, loss of biodiversity, genetic affects and fears of terrorists tampering of our food systems. Lack of authority has been a major factor. E.Coli evovled from cattle feeding in their own manure - a prime fertilizing ingredient. Fast Food chain, Taco Bell, added to the scare of e.coli and hurt the company's bottom line. Recently, the government proposed a law banning the use of trans fat - wich had genetic growth hormones present. This brings us to our major blab - OBESITY! This epidemic is spreading accross the world, the U.S. in particular. Kids are consuming more fast food and places them at risk of diabetes and ultimately death. Laws have been made to ban junk food from school cafetarias. Short films such as Super Size Me and blogs (12degreesoffreedom.blogspot.com) are all spreading this awarness of the food crisis. The agricultural economy is booming however. But with so much attention being placed on the food industry...people have become more health concious. Whole Foods Market and Wild Oats have seen a need in the market for organic foods and took action, despite higher prices. Many people are not aware of what lies beyond the supermarket shelf... artificial food containing possible chemicals that places you at risks like obesity. Econmists agree that we are in a food crisis. I'll have several updates on this issue due to the growing awarness.
