BUSH: To Corn or Not to Corn?

In President Bush's State of the Union speech he stated that America should become less dependent on foreign oil. Instead he proposed his solution for corn based ethanol. Huh? Don't worry. All farmers in the nation will be planting corn. Economists have stated that there is money to be made in the corn industry and we should take action. This greater corn production could be used for ethanol - think in terms of a replacement for gas. Bush thought his plan was great...but it turned out that it was not really planned correctly. People are outraged and show no support to this corn based ethanol solution. First, higher prices lead to the production of greater corn supply and will lower corn prices. Second, the growing awarness of the potential in the corn industry will lead to more farmers growing corn. These farmers will eventually need more land to produce a high smount of corn surplus to provide an alternative to foreign gas and real estate values will increase. This will place the agricultural economy in a poor condition. Soon, we will realize that it will be much cheaper to use imported gas from foreign nations. But then, Bush will be reluctant-allowing his personal issues get in the way of leading the nation. Apparently, the Middle East is off of our list for any oil agreements. Russia? We don't stand a chance. Also, you would think that President Bush, being raised in Texas, would have some education on farming. If not, he could have consulted many engineers, agricultural experts etc. who would have told him from the start that to grow corn you need fertilizer containing nitrogen. Crops cannot grow without this chemical. Finally, nitrogen-based-fertilizer derives from....NATURAL GAS! wich is currently being imported. President Bush: Corn is not the solution.
