Yahoo! Makes a Touchdown
Yes, its September...Yes, its fall... and YES, its college football season! Yahoo! takes full advantage of the moment. The company wants to elaborate on the "football fever." What the heck does that mean? Basically, Yahoo! plays it smart by promoting their fantasy football portal (Football '06). Their goal is to create a personalized web experience in which they can connect with their users. Fantasy Football is becoming a craze with growing buzz, but its not yer considered a trend... give it some time to grow. The game stats, the team picking... are all in this virtually surreal world, but the prize draws in sports fans from all over the world (up to $25,000 reportedly). Yahoo! generates its profits by placing ads (similar to Superbowl commercials>humor) on the Fantasy Football portal, yet users become distracted and are fed up with all the banner ads. I think that it will eventually become extremely popular if not taken too far. This is a great way for Yahoo! to differ from competition like Microsoft (MSN) and Google by creating a community, making them more consumer friendly. If you ever tried fantasy football, leave a comment. Will it expand and become the new sporting trend with everyone grabbing a piece of the market?
