SUPERSIZED McDonald's
Following the release of the documentary Supersize Me a few years ago, which accused McDonald's of being a main source of our nation's health crisis: Obesity. In the years following the PR debacle, McDonald's has maintained a 'healthy' image. The fast-food chain introduced more salads in their menu and reduced fat in most of their meals (New York State trans-fat law). As a response, stock prices increased and McDonald's enjoyed a period of success. Now, it seems that McDonald's is craving for more. Supersize is Back! McDonald's recently introduced 42-ounce supersized sodas that the company is calling "Hugo" which contains over 400 calories. McDonald's stated that super-sized sodas are back due to popular demand. Also, consumers are thirstier during the summer. At this point, I am confused with McDonald's. I was obviously blindsided by their efforts to create a 'healthy' image. This is a company that is hard to be trusted. McDonald's has a case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. They create this 'nice' image but quickly flip into this 'evil' brand. The company started to advertise Hugo to minorities (already suffering from health problems such as obesity). Is McDonald's being socially irresponsible? Yes. I am annoyed when companies make careless moves that will obviously ruin their image.
