Whatever Happened to MTV? MySpace killed the Video Star

Competition has recieved stron power lately. The media industry is out with the old and in with the new (its own mini entertainment revolution). Major icons in every industry, not just media, are struggling these days. MTV, according to the Wall Street Journal, is a crumbling icon. The 25 year old network is out of the books and considered old print according to today's youth. The media industry is being dominated by the MySpace, who draws in over 100 million registered users who have most likely shifted from the old MTV. The music television giant denies any lost, but the street disagrees (you can't fight statistics). MTV has invested and promoted heavily their online properties in an attempt to steal the crown from MySpace. "Overdrive" is a perfect example, it has seen an extremely low amount of users. MTV still rules when it comes to its cable properties. Hit shows like Laguna Beach help drive in serious ad dollars (maybe they should just stick to drama). Others, like YouTube have entered and stole MTV's spotlight. They went from garage days to a million dollar icon. I say... due to VH1 (MTV's sister network) should merge into one channel because of their huge success with hit shows like Celebrity Fit Club, Flavor of Love and Surreal Life. This will give MTV a new look... because no one tunes in on television to watch music videos... their friends alert them on MySpace and then we all head over to YouTube to see it for ourselves. MTV is heading down a bad road into some hot red fire. What do you think MTV is heading into? Will MySpace ultimately dominate the media industry... and how can MTV regain that crown? Leave a comment, become a blabber. Go ON>>

  1. As an individual who grew up on MTV, i must say that there has been a change in interest. Although i don't have a MYSPACE page my friends have definitely been pressing me to log on. This is the trend, all over young folks are talking about it, even reciting the words of their favorite rap song that might include words refering to MYSPACE.

Keep up the good work. I enjoy reading your blogs.
