What Can Brown Do For You?

A question that deserves an answer. StreetBlabber decided to dig further and find the true response. United Parcel Service (UPS) is the world's largest package delivery company. They deliver more than fourteen million packages per day around the world. Founded in 1907, as the American Messenger Company, UPS has expanded into a full service delivery operation. Throughout the years, UPS has faced some steep competition. The summer of 1971 marked the birth of Federal Express (FedEx) which quickly expanded into an industry behemoth. Both brands offer unique strategies and are well respected for their services. UPS is known for their domestic (ground) shipping, offering local delivery services. Customers appreciate neighborhood delivery workers which makes business personal. On the other hand, FedEx is best known for their "professional" international shipping and business solution. I recently discovered an article featured on MSNBC which explains the ongoing rivalry between UPS and FedEx. Both companies experience peak performance during the holiday season, with online shopping at their highest. Revenues topped $47 Billion a year during this period according to MSNBC. FedEx has a slight advantage because they "dominate the world's larges air-delivery service." But, UPS dominates ground shipping delivering more than 13 million packages daily. Aside from the fact that there has been an increase in competition, UPS has had a major comeback. The company has launched a major campaign titled "What Can Brown Do For You?" which features several 'white-board' explanations that describe the myriad number of services the company has to offer. The website, whiteboard.ups.com, displays presentations about UPS shipping services that are also advertised on television. The company also launched an advertising display here in New York City's Penn Station in which the entire interior subway station was decorated with UPS logos and white board explanations. The company offers international shipping, which utilizes employees who are fluent in different languages. UPS also allows customers to set a specific time they wish to receive a package, intercept a package (hold, re-route or send back) and UPS.com which allows you to gain access to your account. A new service that UPS provides is Business Supply Chain Management and Solutions. The company aids business clients with the use of logistics. Clients are able to e-mail customers regarding their order status, create pre-printed custom package labels for returns, receive UPS business loans, utilize UPS' warehouse management services and more. From the looks of it, UPS is heading on the right track in my opinion. The company realized that FedEx is succeeding in business services and they came on strong. Its difficult to re-create an image but UPS does not have a bad record so it should not be difficult. FedEx will always be known for their business solutions (expansion into FedEx Kinko's) unless a major downfall occurs. Which brand do you think is better... UPS or FedEx? Leave a comment.
