Genentech- A Company with a Mission

Genentech is one of the largest developers and producers of drugs that cure diseases. The company was founded in 1976 by Robert Swanson, a venture capatalist and Dr. Herbert Boyer, a biochemist. Genentech is considered to have founded the biotechnology industry. With health care concerns and diseases on the rise, America is in dire need of a serious company willing to reshape the industry. Genentech has a powerful mission, vision, and cultural values that all engage staff members. The company is community outreach orientated and believes that employees build the corporation. While other biotechnology firms such as Pfizer continously lay-off employees and shut down facilities, Genentech is hiring more staff members and is undergoing major campus construction. The company stated that they plan to recruit these layed off employees and combine all these powerful ideas into one and ultimately succeed. Genentech's main purpose is to be in "business for life", create work that really matters, curing cancer, collaboration, long-term and high risk research, motivate employees with idealism, and research review committe centered. The company also has a philantropical outlook by creating independent, nonprofit organizations. The Genentech Foundation for Biomedical Sciences, for example, supplies support to biomedical education and research to schools in San Francisco Bay Area. The company also donates millions to uninsured and underinsured members of the community. Most of all, Genentech values their employees by creating a nurturing emvironment to work and offering competitive benefits. The following are some examples of employee benefits at Genentech:

*95% of employees are shareholders

*workers are polled weekly for complaints and to make sure that the company is functioning properly.

*Tuition assistanc
*Lending Library
*Full-cost Bay-Area gym membership
*Business casual attire

*Free-cappuccingo, java and iced tea in gourmet cafe

*Made to order sushi

*Friday night keg parties

*Scientists spend 20% of their work on pet projects

*Day care and nursing rooms
*Concierge service

*Campus overlooking San Francisco Bay; complete with shuttle buses and bicycles

*Company-store on campus and online

*Halloween costume dress up

To become an employee at Genentech you must make-up five through six visits and participate in twenty interviews. The company tries to avoid hiring people who are preoccupied with salary title and personal advancement. Genentech has 150 new hires a month. I think that this company will excel in the future and possibly find the cure for cancer.
